TOURNAMENT
ENTRY
The 2009
Michigan AAU Boys Basketball State Tournaments will be divided into two
rounds (pool play and championship) in a two-region format. Each
age/grade group will initially be set up to accommodate 32
teams (16 teams per region) on a first-come-first-serve basis. All
tournament fees and registration information must be received by the
deadline dates in order to enter the tournament. Mail tournament fees,
2009 Request Form, and a copy of the team roster to: Gloria Hall,
MI AAU Boys BB Registrar, 2406 Romence Rd, Portage, MI 49024.
TOURNAMENT
STRUCTURE
The
Michigan AAU Boys Basketball Committee has established a two-division
tournament structure to give more athletes an opportunity to qualify for
a National Championship tournament. The two Divisions will be played at
different times to allow teams not qualifying for Nationals in Division
1 the opportunity to play and qualify for a National Championship in
Division 2. Division 1 will be the open division. The competition level
will be consistent with AAU high caliber play associated with travel
teams. Division 2 will be the school division. The level of competition
will be consistent with school teams or friends’ teams. Clubs can
choose to play in either division or play in both. Both divisions will
be played under the same tournament format and have the same roster
requirements. However, Division 2 National Championship qualifiers may
not pick up players from teams that have qualified to
compete in the Division 1 National Championship. Division 1 qualifiers may
pick up players from Division 2 rosters when going to a
National Championship.
TOURNAMENT
FEES
In
addition to club, player and coach registration fees, a tournament entry
fee has to be paid by each team entered into the state tournament. The
tournament fee to play in each Division is $375.00 per
team. (Teams that participate in the Division 1 tournament and that
also play in the Division 2 tournament will only have to pay $700.00
for Division 2, if $700.00 is sent with Division 1 fees.) For the
Michigan Boys Basketball state tournament fees, a cashier's check
or money order is the only acceptable form of payment. The
cashier's check or money order should be made payable to Michigan
AAU Boys Basketball and mailed (along with the 2009 Request
Form) to Gloria Hall, MI AAU Boys Registrar, 2406 Romence Road, Portage,
MI 49024. The tournament fees must be received by the deadline date.

TOURNAMENT
FORMAT
All
Division tournaments, 7U to Senior Boys, will be played in a
two-regional site setting. Bracketing will be set up to accommodate 32
teams with two regional sites of 16 teams each. Teams will indicate on
their club form their preference of the Division and regional site they
wish to play. Tournament spots at regional sites will be assigned on a
first-come-first-serve basis with paid fees. If a regional site has a
full compliment of teams, the tournament field will be expanded and
additional teams will be assigned at the discretion of the Tournament
Director.
Each team participating in the
tournament will play a format that would guarantee each team a minimum
of 3 games. Based on the number of teams participating, the basic
tournament will be played under an international pool play format of
four (4) or more teams per pool. The top two (2) teams in four team
pools or the top three (3) teams in five team pools will advance to play
a single elimination Championship Round. If there are nine teams or less
in any tournament field, a tournament format will be devised to
guarantee each team 3 games.
Pool
play and the Championship Round will be played over two weekends. To go
through the championships, a team will play two (2) weekends. In age
divisions with nine (9) teams are less the tournament will be concluded
on the first weekend. Age divisions with ten (10) or more teams
competing will play through the quarter final round on the first
weekend, with four (4) teams from each region advancing to the
championship round. The final eight (8) teams will play in a crossover
format. The entry fee to the AAU National Championships for the winning
team of each age division in both Division 1 and Division 2 that have 10
or more teams participating will be reimbursed by Michigan AAU Boys
Basketball to those teams that actually participate in the National
Championships. Teams that do not make the Final Four in the Division 1
tournament are encouraged to participate in the Division 2 tournament to
qualify for the Division 2 National Championship.
